Hunter Hayes, "country music with a lot of experimentation"

I flip on Good Morning America and a young man grins at me like a neighbor.

Gwen Ifill introduces her 20 year old guest as Hunter Hayes, flashing grainy photos of a tiny towhead with an accordian performing on stage with Hank Williams Jr.

The mature kid opens his mouth to let flow musicality and I am oversold.

He is twenty-something, born in 1991. I invite you to take a look.

With Country Music on the move, this huge talent could surpass Justin Bieber in the hearts of females everywhere. He was in a movie with Robert Duvall, sang with Johnny Cash and was the opening act for Taylor Swift.

Hunter Hayes received a toy accordian from his grandmother when he was two.

And his Louisiana babysitter loved cajun music; he fell asleep listening to the likes of Cajun Boogie.

"If I could make noise with anything, I was going to," he said.

He played with Hank Williams Jr. at the ripe old age of four.

When he was six, Hunter Hayes played the accordian during a church service in a Robert Duvall movie, The Apostle.

He sang in English and in French, and stunned his audience into silence at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, not only by his performance, but because he was directing the sound production on set. "All my band members were old enough to be my dad..."

His favorite gifts were noise makers. Duvall gave him his first guitar; he also played drums and the piano.

At age 11, Hunter Hayes added a new album Make a Wish to his first release five years earlier, Through My Eyes.

By now, he'd stumped for President Clinton and played a White House BBQ with June and Johnny Cash and Charlie Daniels.

Bing music reported this young man had "captured the angst of every young person longing for autonomy."

A Hunter Hayes appearance on Good Morning America cements what country music fans have understood for years; this young man has true, true talent and likeability.

He is competing for the New Artist Award at the 47th Annual Academy of Country Music Awards. Seems ironic that such a prolific and seasoned musician should compete for a new artist award.
