Pep Talk for Introverts
Do you need lots of time to yourself to re-energize? Are you sometimes labeled "aloof" or "withdrawn?" You may be part of the 25% minority of folk who are true "introverts."
It's important to tune into who you really are as an introvert- to stop trying to fit into some extroverted way of being. Introverts act a certain way because they are wired differently, not because there is something wrong with them.
Introverts must value the way they are different and schedule their lives around the need to recharge from the inside. There is nothing wrong with how they behave and what they value. In fact, as people age, it becomes an advantage to focus within!
Consider this excerpt from Eckhart Tolle's latest book, A New Earth:
"Unconscious people - and many remain unconscious, trapped in their egos throughout their lives - will quickly tell you who they are: their name, their occupation, their personal history, the shape or state of their body, and whatever else they identify with. Others may appear to be more evolved because they think of themselves as an immortal soul or living spirit. But do they really know themselves, or have they just added some spiritual sounding concepts to the content of their mind? Knowing yourself goes far deeper than the adoption of a set of ideas or beliefs. Spiritual ideas and beliefs may at best be helpful pointers, but in themselves they rarely have the power to dislodge the more firmly established core concepts of who you think you are, which are part of the conditioning of the human mind. Knowing yourself deeply has nothing to do with whatever ideas are floating around in your mind. Knowing yourself is to be rooted in Being, instead of lost in your mind." - Page 186

You make me laugh all the time (in a good way). I wish you a Happy New Year and all the best for you and your family (including that cute dog from your photo)!
Thank you for the links. I am not sure what so say to being congratulated for being "strange" ... sometimes I wish I could just "trot" along like a regular 'sheep' and not care about half the things my mind woun't stop 'chasing'. Thank you anyway though.
Wanted to ask you if you know: are people born introverts or extroverts or is it experience and circumstances which turn people one way or another in this aspect. I honestly did not know about this introvert/extrovert stuff until about a couple of months ago. Being classified as an introvert almost seems like a good excuse for me being rather "strange". (One of my French teachers in high-school nick-named me "The Strange One", never figured out why ...).
Hehe ... your blog made me feel a bit better about myself. Thank you.

Good hub! I am a full-fledged introvert and I usually love it. Its great to see all these links and read what others have to say.
I find this hub and everyone sharing fascinating. I think that I'm definitely more of an introvert now but I'm not sure if it's because I'm older, married, financially challenged. I think that this is an important hub and should be researched more. Thanks for sharing. Btw, it's fine to quote other authors it's called a literature review and all writers and researchers write and read them. Don't ever apologize for not writing everything yourself. You did a wonderful job.

Hey this is a very interesting hub. i really liked the way you have written. Im sure people who are introverts will benefit from it
This is a complicated question for me. When I was young, I was extremely shy, and the only way to answer the question was with a resounding YES! But as I got older, I became dissatisfied being such a recluse, and I forced myself to get off my butt and go out and become more sociable. For a while, I reveled in this.
Then four years ago, I was attacked by a neighbor. In the aftermath, I have PTSD, Depression, Anxiety, and this ugly little beast called Intermittent Explosive Disorder. There are times now when I have no choice but to cut myself off from people, even though when I am doing so I know I can't stay hidden forever. So what does that make me? At my heart, I don't believe I am an introvert, but I do have introverted tendencies.
Does it make me an introvert if my dream place would be a fifty acre lot on top of a mountain with a 25 foot fence around it? Am I introverted because I get annoyed when interupted while writing by friends; (but I never, never mind when I'm doing hated paperwork).
Yup I thought it over I must be one of them.
At the next I.A. meeting I will introduce myself and say 'My name is Zsuzsy and I'm an introvert. (and loving it ha)

I am very introverted myself and I do enjoy time to myself writing, painting, drawing, and other relaxing activities. I have never gone to bars, clubs, or anything like that. When I used to go out it was to the rare occasional movie with friends, but now most of them are married so I prefer to just spend quality time with family and a few friends. However, I am perfectly happy typing away or just drawing. However, I do talk in public and stand up for myself when needed, but I am very sensitive towards the needs of others and always say nice and helpful things. Often I get complimented for this and people tell me it is nice I am considerate and kind towards others feelings. I just never want to say something hurtful, mean, or overly joking, which is more of a trait of introverts I would say. Us introverts can be funny, but we are more witty and do silly things rather than pointing it out in grandiose ways :)
All of us puter people are natural introverts, writers and artist too. Alone in our creative caves, we hide brilliance from world, hence they go blind. Astrologically speaking the 12th House rules "behind the scenes", aloness, shyness and "Harry the Hernit." I have the natal Mercury here.......I only answered myself a dozen times today...out loud!
Quiet as it's kept;-) being introverted is an advantage in marketing and sales.
As a recovering introvert I am reminded of a story from the 70's about a top real estate agent. The astonishing part of the story was that this real estate superstar was totally blind.
He said something at the awards banquet that should give introverts inspiration and extroverts a lesson. He said; "I have an advantage over sighted agents. I have to sell through their eyes."
Even if you are not comfortable talking and perhaps especially when you are not comfortable talking, that tendency can be your greatest asset in marketing. Think about what it would be like to show a home (or your own product or service) through the customers eyes.
Think about what it would be like to sell by listening. Asking questions and listening. The one asking questions is in control. Learn to ask the right questions and your prospect is pulled toward becoming a customer. Extroverts push. Introverts pull quite naturally. It's easier and more effective.
The most difficult skill we have to teach in sales training is to get extroverts to listen. It's a critical skill because if I say it, you doubt it. If you say it, it's always true. Introverts be encouraged.. You have a great advantage. You have the gift of listening and observing. Think about that for awhile. I feel a blog coming on.

Hmmm this is an interesting blog. I dont think im an introvert im VERY loud and outspoken in public or socially, i do however, tend to twaddle around the house getting wrapped up in little projects....so i need to get out more but that might be because i dont know many people in my area/ a little bit of depression, what do you think?
Good questions - I have more introvert characteristics than otherwise. Hmmm.... I prefer Hubbing and hanging out on the computer at times to "real world" interactions. I find marketing difficult and I don't even like to answer the phone sometimes - thank goodness for caller ID. On the other hand, the gifts include being extremely sensitive, even intuitive, about things. I'd rather observe than engage. Sound familiar?

I was an introvert for a significant part of my life. I was raised in a an enviroment where I was told I didn't and wouldn't amount to much. I was only able to shed this persona once I began to feel good about myself and gradually gain confidence. Thank you for the informative hub. It will surely help those who wish to exit from their shell.
